Man, I remember that anime. I saw it a looong time ago, and didn't like it much. Pretty typical Cowboy Bebop-wannabe without the artistic elements that made Bebop great.

That's a pretty striking image, though, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone working on Firefly had seen a bit of Outlaw Star.

Yeah, outlaw star is ok, but definitely doesnt beat cowboy bebop. The fun thing about it is watching the 90's art and animation that kinda reminds me of 80's scifi. four-pointed stars and the like.

Tbh, Outlaw Star was the first anime a bunch of people I know and I ever saw.  So perhaps I'm biased but I think its great! :p

Both shows were made by Sunrise, but Bebop came out AFTER Outlaw Star. The shows have very little in common (they are basically opposites) other than the fact they are both Space Operas.

Re: Joss Whedon ripped off Outlaw Star!

Meh, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I didn't bother to look up which came first. Though it doesn't change my point.

My point wasn't that Outlaw Star was a ripoff of Cowboy Bebop (either way, the two shows have very different plots), but rather that it was similar enough (action/sci-fi anime with a similar look, an anti-hero main character, lots of filler) for me to compare it unfavorably to Bebop -- mainly, it was a "typical" anime series, while Bebop attempted to be more important and artistic. Cowboy Bebop was just the first name I came up with while thinking about it -- any other action/sci-fi anime with occasional artistic elements would fit.

I'm not a huge fan of Bebop either, to be honest. It makes sense that I don't like Outlaw Star -- it's just not the type of anime I like.

Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star follow the same general format that was popular in 90s scifi anime, and Bebop did it a hell of a lot better. BTW, I wouldn't call Bebop a space opera.
